Sehr empfehlenswert! : Peter und der Wolf op. 67. Klassik-CD. The History of G.I. Joe-The First Twenty-Five Years

April 17th, 2010 by MacStore

Image : http://www.flickr.com

G.I. JOE was the first boy’s “Action Figure” in the world. G.I. Joe first hit the scene as an 11-1/2 inch “doll” for boys. What made G.I. Joe unique was its 21 moving parts for interactive play. G.I. Joe is named after the movie “The Story of G.I. JOE” which gained great popularity in the early sixties.

Due to the popularity of G.I. Joe, the Hasbro Company that invented the action figure decided to expand the brand’s line in 1967. Hasbro introduced the Canadian Mountie set of G.I. Joes.

Five years after the original G.I. Joe Hasbro was producing all categories of the United States Armed Forces action figures as well as many foreign armed forced. It wasn’t until 1969 that “G.I. Joe” went from being the name of one specific action figure, to the name of an entire line of action figures for boys.

By the 1970s the G.I. Joe brand was doing quite well and Hasbro kept thinking of innovative ways to keep their successful brand alive. It was at this time that they started producing the G.I. Joe Adventure Team, which was comprised of a group of soldiers all committed to the same goal as G.I. Joe.

As the seventies continued to evolve, so did G.I. Joe. He was given flocked hair, and even some G.I. Joes came with a kung-fu grip. It was in the seventies that the first superhuman team member was introduced, his name was Bulletman. Other new team members introduced in the seventies included Eagle Eye and The Defenders.

G.I. Joe found a force that he could not defeat in 1978 when the price of petroleum grew so high that G.I. Joe production was suspended. It wasn’t until 1982 that the line was re-introduced in a smaller size. The smaller size action figures were created as a direct result of keeping production costs lower to accommodate the price of petroleum.

It was also in 1982 that G.I. Joe was licensed with Marvel Comics. This partnership was very lucrative for Hasbro and Marvel with $200 million in combined revenue by 1984. At the time there were uniforms, weapons, vehicles and comic books rounding out the G.I. Joe brand.

Also in the early eighties G.I. Joe found himself fighting a slew of adversaries including the Drednoks. By this time the brand had grown so large that real human characters were being incorporated into the G.I. Joe adventure team. The first was professional wrestler Sgt. Slaughter followed by Chicago Bears legend William “The Refrigerator” Perry.

Do You Need to Have Your Action Figures Professionally Graded?

April 16th, 2010 by MacStore

Professional Grading

It is because of the problems and unreliability of the C-Scale grading system that the demand for an internationally recognized and accepted grading system grew and led to the explosion in the professional action figure grading services.

Do You Need Professional Grading?

If you plan on selling any of your action figures, particularly any vintage or valuable figures you want to get the best bang for your bucks, so yes you should get them professionally graded. BUT If you are going to pay to have your action figure’s condition and authenticity verified by a professional grading service make sure it is a well known, established and respected company that you use.

A Word of Caution… Having your action figure/s professionally graded can be expensive so only get those figures that are either vintage figures or valuable figures professionally graded.

What or Who Are the AFA?

The Action Figure Authority (AFA) was born from a frustration of all the different systems and scales that where being used in the market to grade action figures without any uniformity or standardization. More collectors are beginning to demand that valuable figures are professionally graded before accepting them and more dealers seem to be accepting that a valuable action figure should be professionally authenticated and graded. The AFA is committed to meet or exceed the action figure markets unique requirements while promoting a healthy and fun environment for all. AFA state that their main goals and aims are to:

  • give the collector the advantage by revealing each action figures true characteristics, thus promoting the healthy growth of sight unseen purchases of action figures.
  • to gain your trust and respect.
  • to create a consensus that AFA’s grading standard accurately reflects the input of all collectors and dealers.
  • to promote interest in the collecting of action figures by the safe and enjoyable purchasing of AFA graded figures.

The AFA Grading Scale

The AFA Grading Scale consists of three levels, each with three sub-levels. These are there Gold, Silver and Bronze levels.

AFA Gold The Premium level is the AFA Gold level which consists of the grades 100, 95, and 90.

AFA Silver level The second level is the Silver level which consists of the grades 85, 80, and 75.

AFA Bronze Level The Bronze Level action figure consists of the grades 70, 60, and below. Action Figures that receive these grades typically have damage ranging anywhere from simply noticeable at first glance to extremely significant.

AFA Sub grades

There are three sub grades for AFA Graded action figures which are assigned for the Card, Blister, and the Action Figure. Once the grader has been established the overall grade for your action figure, they will assign individual grades for each of these three categories.

What Defects Will Affect My Action Figures Grade?

  • Creases, bends or tears.
  • Price tag marks
  • Blistering or bubbling
  • Discoloration
  • Broken limbs
  • Yellowing
  • Bubble or card separation

These are a few of the more common defects or faults found that will affect your action figures value.

Autographed Action Figures

Over the last few years that has been a large increase in the number and variety of action figures available of stars particularly from TV Series, Sports and Music which has resulted in an in figures autographed by the star or character depicted by the action figure. My guess is that with this becoming more and more popular the Professional Grading sites will begin to include autograph verification into there service, however this is an area fraught with dangers and hazards.

Operation Enduring Freedom: America Fights Back

April 15th, 2010 by MacStore

Disappointing and Disjointed! – –
Rather than “examining” anything (which other reviews claim it does), this “documentary” is simply a short, boring, hour-long collage of pictures and soundbites of US military actions in Afghanistan since 9/11 — likely from the US government’s point of view (the movie was produced with the cooperation of the Department of Defense). There is no coherent message, no overall theme, and terrible editing as well (witness the opening lines by Donald Rumsfeld). In documentaries, I expect to gain insights into a particular situation, time, or place; this film provides neither new information about terrorism or Afghanistan and its people, nor a thoughtful critique of what US military action was or meant there. Highly, highly disappointing.

American Girl Doll Collecting – A Guide For Girls

April 12th, 2010 by MacStore

American Girl doll collecting is a fun activity for girls of all ages. The American Girl collection has something for everyone, from Bitty Baby for girls who love baby dolls, to dolls who look just like their owners. Accessories, furniture, books, pets, and friends help to complete a doll’s world.

The American Girl website is a good place for girls to start if they are new to the American Girl line of dolls. They can browse through the web site to see all of the dolls that American Girl has to offer. Some girls may be attracted to the line of historical dolls to learn more about different time periods in American history. Others may enjoy the modern dolls, with sports uniforms and dancing costumes.

Collecting starts with the doll itself, but American Girl offers many different types of accessories that go far beyond clothes. Of course a girl can collect a wardrobe for their doll, but they can also find beds, tables and chairs, trunks and other storage cases, and many other furniture options. Accessories can include many different pets, musical instruments, suitcases, and much more. The historical dolls have period furniture, accessories, and even transportation options, such as horses and carriages.

But what fun is collecting if you can’t share your collection? American Girl’s retail locations offer special activities for a girl and her American Girl dolls. Friends and their dolls can have lunch or tea, dolls can get their hair styled in the salon, or other special activities. Of course, the retail locations have the complete lines of American Girl dolls on display for girls to browse and shop.

American Girl doll collecting can be quite an investment. The high quality of the American Girl products means that the price point for these products is higher than that of their competitors. However, the higher price point means that not everyone will have American Girl products, and a collection is more unique.

There are many online resources and communities for American Girl doll collecting. A quick search finds many communities that offer something for everyone. These communities allow American Girl doll collectors to interact, share information about the dolls, and arrange for parties and other get-togethers. Also, these sites can provide information on retired dolls and products, so collectors looking to complete collections for a specific doll can find items that are no longer being produced.

For collectors looking for retired products, eBay is the primary place for buying and selling American Girl products. eBay offers up dolls, clothing, accessories, magazines, books, furniture, and so much more. It is important to review the quality of items being sold on eBay, because some could be in pristine condition, others can be “well loved”.

Korean War Veterans Memorial,Plover,WI

April 2nd, 2010 by MacStore

The Memorial, located on the island in Lake Pacawa, is composed of a circular wall, open at the front, then slowly rising on both sides to its highest point at the rear, 10 feet above the base. There are four flag poles placed around the wall at equal intervals and heights; the US Flag, the UN Flag, the Korean Flag and the State of Wisconsin Flag. Inside the wall is a 8 foot walkway, with 6 stone benches, one for each year UN Combat Forces were in Korea: 1950, 1951, 1952, 1953, 1954 and 1955. At the front of the walkway is a pathway leading to and from the Memorial, and just above the location where the pathway and walkway come together, a 4 foot round bronze plaque covers a time capsule with memento’s of the Korean War. A Memorial Statuary is composed of five larger than life figures. A Nurse leads the group, because without the dedication, compassion, and bravery of the Medics, many would not have returned. Following the nurse are Army and Marine infantrymen, because the Infantry bears the brunt of battle. Following are an Air Force Pilot and Sailor, without whose support the battle would soon have been lost. The statues face east, because Korea is in the Far East, and in memory of all who lost their lives and are still missing in action. All five figures are touching, touching in a brotherhood that comes of battle. There are no weapons on the Memorial this is to confirm the veterans wish for peace. The five figures stand in memory of all veterans who serve our State
